IMAGE PROCESSING & APPLICATIONS
The group investigates high-level, problem-oriented methods, algorithms and applications related to image processing, machine vision and computer vision.
The research activity on methods and algorithms covers a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to:
- analysis and development of visual descriptors for visual recognition (including shape, texture and colour descriptors);
- visual perception (ability to interpret the surrounding environment);
- rendering methods for solid models;
- virtual and augmented reality, image processing tools for shape acquisition, analysis and reconstruction;
- Deep Learning.
There is strong interest in the applications of the above methods in many different areas. The following, in particular, are strongly relevant to the group:
- product design and manufacturing (e.g., product inspection, defect detection, surface analysis and grading, automated part counting);
- virtual and augmented reality for product design;
- conservation and valorisation of the artistic and cultural heritage (such as virtual experience for artworks, reconstruction and analysis of archaeological artefacts for classification and archiving);
- thermal imaging and thermal image analysis;
- image processing methods for biomedical applications such as prothesis design, image interpretation and computer-assisted clinical decision-making;
- emotion recognition for user experience; motion analysis for risk assessment;
- forensic imaging;
- image processing methods for photogrammetry, laser scanning and shape reconstruction.
